Episode Two Overview

Sunday the 30th brought with it the second installment of the brand new television series ‘MASTER BUILD: The Real World of Building and Renovating’, and episode two did not disappoint. Liv Phyland and Tim Ross continue to explore what makes a Master Builder and highlight more incredible projects. In this episode their whirlwind tour around NSW takes them to Orange, Darlinghurst, Palm Beach, and Cabarita.

First up was April and Mike from Pinnacle Custom Homes and their Pavilion House in Orange. The wife and husband team worked with Homeowners Emma and Andrew to create a sturdy, protected home which involved minimal excavation. In this home every space is made use of, with every nook and cranny being used for storage.

“What they’ve created is not only functional, it has a minimal environmental footprint, and makes the most of those stunning views.” – Tim Ross

April and Mike also shared with us their thoughts on the MBA – saying “I always saw around me that the higher-end builders, or the people I looked up to around the town – being part of them [the Master Builders Association], it was almost to the point of being a necessity.”

The next home is located in Darlinghurst, a terrace renovation undertaken by SQ Projects’ builders Matt and Maryrose. The home boasts a pivot door which swings upwards to create a canopy in the garden, integrating indoors and outdoors, unique tiles, sliding screens between living rooms, brass detailing, and some extra-ordinary cabinetry and joinery items.

“They [SQ Projects] really go out of their way to make sure you’re happy with the job”
– Homeowner of Darlinghurst Terrace

This week’s trending feature seen throughout our Master Builder’s homes is Brass! Liv Phyland takes us through a few examples of what this versatile material can bring to a home.

“It is just as at home amongst contemporary concrete and glass, as it is amongst more romantic details. The appeal of using this metal is that the patina changes over time, giving an organic weathered look to your home.”
– Liv Phyland

Tim also speaks with one of the Master Builders Association’s legal experts – Hannah Shephard. We find out how a building contract works, how it affects the builders and clients, and what is needed to commence the build safely and legally.

“Basically, the contract is there to get the work done, and get the builder paid. To assist the parties to avoid disputes by containing a whole raft of terms that make their rights and obligations clear.”
– Hannah Shephard

Surrounded by Pittwater, the Pacific Ocean and Broken Bay, this next house in Palm Beach was an incredibly difficult build. Specialising in luxury residential buildings, David from Bau Group was the perfect builder to take on this challenge. Everything for this project had to come in and go out via a barge, and the barge could only operate during high tide.

“I check the tides to surf; you’re checking it to build!”
– Liv Phyland

Transport wasn’t the only issue to consider for this home. It is consistently exposed to harsh elements, so the major materials used in construction were structural steel, in-filled with Spotted Gum Timber. Both very robust products perfect for going up against wind, tide, and rain.

The final house of the episode is a concrete wonder built by Brad from J & B Projects on the far north NSW coast in Cabarita. With a location right on the water it was vital to take advantage of all the ocean views. The inside flows to the outside seamlessly, and makes use of every part of the house, with a rooftop native garden and entertaining area. The transition from indoors to outdoors is floorless, with an amazing view. Liv Phyland describes it as

elite alfresco living ”.

Featuring LED lights situated in a shadow line of the staircase which provide the illusion that they’re floating, a DJ deck and a steam shower, this home has all you could need and more.”

Two episodes of Master Build are now under the belt and two more to go, plus the televised awards night on the 20th of November.

Episode three airs on Sunday the 6th of November at 11am!
