Episode Five Overview
“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2022 Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Awards.”
With these words the long awaited Awards Night for the MBANSW Excellence in Housing Awards began – viewed on 7two and 7plus as the finale to MASTER BUILD: The Real World of Building and Renovating. This one and a half hour special showcases the best of the best builders in the state, including some familiar faces from earlier in the series.
Our hosts Angie Asimus and Tim Ross eloquently take us through numerous types of homes and projects, while co-host Taylor Aiken interviews some of the judges and builders involved in this year’s accolades.
Each different type of build was entered into a defining category so the eight MBA judges could fairly assess the entries going up against one another. The end of the episode highlights the three major MBA awards; Display Home of the Year, Young Builder of the Year, and the final and ultimate award – Master Builder of the year.
“To an industry that employs more full-time people, engages the largest number of small businesses, and trains more apprentices than any other sector across the nation; Master Builders salutes you, your achievements, and your major contribution to the built environment and wider economy.” – Simon Pilcher, President of Master Builders Association NSW during his welcome speech
BTM Constructions receiving their award for the ‘Avalon Apartment’
In the Granny Flats Category, we saw BTM Constructions take home the award for their Avalon Apartment featured in episode one. We also see Chateau Architects + Builders win a Design and Construct Award for their ‘Northbridge Home’ seen in episode three.
“For building companies who work with in-house architects to bring their clients dream home to life. Being able to work on a project from concept to completion streamlines the process and ensures that design complications can be ironed out early, saving on time frames and budgets.” – Tim Ross on Design and Construct Homes
The category next up is Contract Houses (homes designed by an architect or drafts person).
“This is the most hotly contested category in the Excellence in Housing Awards” – Angie Asimus
We see Pinnacle Custom Homes from episode two, Todd Knaus for ‘the Barn’ from episode one, Ledbury Constructions for their Bunkeren Home from the fourth episode, J & B (Aust) projects for their Cabarita project from episode two, OneUp Building for their Earlwood project featured in episode four all take home winning awards in the Contract Houses category. While Foley Construction was awarded a joint winner award for their house in Lennox head from episode four.

“House Alterations and Additions is the most varied category of the Master Builders Association Excellence in Housing Awards. It encompasses everything from adding another room, rebuilding a bathroom, to totally reimagining the original house structure.” – Tim Ross

The night’s entertainment - Brazilian Samba Dancers
TCM Constructions for Ravenscourt won the award in their House Restorations and Additions category (also in episode one) and The Excellence in Sustainability went to Souter Built for the Pepper Tree Passive House.
“The first certified passive house in the Illawarra. The Pepper Tree Passive House was built to prove to the industry that houses can be built better for the environment, healthier for the occupants, superior in energy efficiency and does not cost the earth. Integrating the dwelling around a 50-year-old pepper tree was the most important environmental issue of this project.” – Tim Ross

We then reach the pinnacle of the evening with the announcement of the three major categories. First up are the finalists for the Display Home of the Year. The Young Builder of the Year Award is open to all entrants under 35 – the winner is decided by the panel of judges to be the best person to set the highest of standards, who demonstrates the ability to consistently go above and beyond for their clients

“The bakery is the best project I have personally built” – Joey Pamment
Master Builder of the Year Finalists are Ginardi from episode four (who won their category in Contract Houses), Pacific Plus Constructions (taking a win for contract houses) , Toki Construction for Gunnamatta House (a winner of their House Alterations and Additions Category), and Heanesbuilt for the Mona Lane Project (winning in the Town Houses Category).
And the Master Builder of the Year award went to
Pacific Plus Constructions!
“I’m completely blown away by this award, when I reflect back on my 30-year career in construction I’m not sure how I got to this moment. I never set out for Pacific Plus Constructions to be Master Builder of the Year – but instead to master my own personal goals and overcome all the challenges that this industry can throw at you. It is hard work, sometimes thankless, and a lot of the time hugely frustrating, but my team is certainly what has made PPC successful, and I am thankful to each and every one of you.” - Phil Strudwick, Pacific Plus Constructions, Master Builder of the Year 2022
Afterwards the night was expertly wrapped up by our hosts.
“From the smallest to the largest of builds, every entry and every category this year demonstrated a high level of expertise and skill.” – Tim Ross
“On behalf of the Master Buidlers Association, thank you for joining us for the 2022 excellence in housing awards and congratulation to all of our winners.” – Angie Asimus
